SEE-THROUGH
PROJECT - SEE-THROUGH
Working Area – Santiniketan
The visual investigation "See-Through" delves into the lives of workers who are concealed within society, making a substantial contribution to our surroundings but frequently going unrecognised or overlooked. The choice to use green construction netting as the main material for this project is both literal and symbolic. This safety netting, which is frequently seen covering building sites, serves as a partition between the outside world and the work taking place behind it. However, the netting also provides protection. Along with the location, the faces and lives of the workers are also hidden, making them veiled figures in society.
This construction netting captures the observers' interest by suggesting what is beyond without giving it away completely.
Repurposing this material as the canvas and framework for my artwork encourages viewers to consider the physical and societal obstacles that mask the humanity and contributions of workers. To capture glimpses of discussions and ideas that float about labour and class but never delve into the heart of these workers' actual realities, the work incorporates words and phrases that arise from the surrounding society discourse.
"See-Through" draws attention to this paradox: Although the net is supposed to protect, it isolates and makes people invisible. Because of the voyeurism it evokes, viewers are forced to examine their own roles as spectators who may see but not hear. By encouraging society to recognise the people who are behind the walls, I hope to close the gap between visibility and invisibility with this project. By doing this, "See-Through" invites viewers to see past appearances and relate to the little-known tales of those who create our cities but are never seen.
